Townsend is the son of Frost Townsend, and he has an older sister named Tiffany. Sean became interested in gymnastics from watching the 1988 Olympic Games. In 2001 he became the world parallel bars champion, the first individual medal won for the U.S. men since 1979. Townsend was also a Sullivan Award finalist in 2001. He is now interested in pursuing a business career and enjoys playing pool and going out with friends in his spare time. And he is a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
